CHECKING IN: TE ARATIPI

By Nest Journal

Perched 600m above the Pacific Ocean, with views spanning up to the Mahia Peninsula, sits Te Aratipi. An inspiring story stemmed from a covid project, now a labour of love. This beautiful cabin is Hawkes Bays newest (and greenest) accomodation.

Nestled amongst native remnant bush, Te Aratipi, is perched 600m high above the Pacific ocean. With views spanning up to the Mahia peninsula and down to the Ruahines, Kawekas and even the Manawhatu gorge, this remote dual-cabin set up is the perfect escape. Te Aratipi is off grid and comprised of a mixture of new and salvaged farm materials. Ed and Ro wanted to create an old-fashioned back country hut for family and friends to enjoy along with a small number of outside stays each season.

With the help of DOC and Hawkes Bay Regional Council, they are aiming to have Gillies Bush (where the cabins are situated) fenced off over the next few years. This is one of the most valuable pieces of remnant bush left on the Maraetotara Plateau. To protect and restore this bush is truly a gift for future generations.

Guests are whisked up to the cabins by a Can-am to ‘the top of the world’. Once there, you’ll find yourselves spoilt with choice over the outdoor bath, the swing hammock or the infinity deck to kick your feet up and watch the world go by. Bliss. The dual-cabins and surrounding area is exclusively yours for the duration of your stay. If relaxing is your thing, kick your feet up and tuck into a good book. If intrepid exploration is up your alley, you can explore the native remnant bush, farm and limestone plateau by foot. Guests are also welcome to walk through the Old Pump House and if playing golf is an activity you find pleasurable, there is also a 9-hole farm course (additional ‘can-am’ farm golf as an added bonus)

Fancy being a little… fancy? Te Aratipi can arrange a helicopter transfer for you, if you fancy indulging. We suggest a long lunch at Craggy Winery first before taking a flight up to them. Ideal for a honeymoon or if flying around in helicopters is your thing, the perfect weekend getaway.
