CHECKING IN: FLEETWOOD

A Modern Hideaway On The Quiet Side Of Waiheke

Photography By Nest Journal & Trelise Von S.

We arrived on Waiheke Island on a glorious Tuesday afternoon. The ferry trip across, only a short 20 minutes. On a good day, most sit on the top deck and enjoy the serene views of the Gulf Harbour.

Upon our arrival, we hurried our way past the crowds to our friend awaiting us in the carpark island side. Arriving in style in a Jeep Wrangler, hired through our stay at Fleetwood - we knew we were in for a treat. As there are no uber’s on Waiheke (sorry folks), you’ll need to organise a ride to explore the island. Fleetwood offer the option of hiring a private jeep to zip around in. Trust us its so worth it. If you’ve ever wanted to own a jeep but the bank account say’s otherwise, this is your chance.

Fleetwood is the perfect place for you to slow down, unwind and reconnect in the tranquil and peaceful setting of Awaawaroa Valley. The accommodation, set on 18 acres, offers privacy and sun filled west facing decks encouraging rest and relaxation. With stunning views over the valley and beautiful bush works through to Te Matuku Bay, you will leave feeling well rested.

We arrived at the house, welcomed with a board of artisan bread, eggs, fresh muesli and a note from the captain herself, Jackie. When stylist Jackie made the move from Auckland to Waiheke, she found her paradise on the lesser known side of the island. Over the years, from the fruits of her labour, she’s built a multitude of dwellings on the property, each with their own finesse and character. Jackie (quite the character herself) invited us into her home for an early evening drink . We spent a few hours getting to know Jackie and her life on the island. Swapping stories sitting next to the open fire, we discovered her passion for art, and love for the serendipitous moments in life. Her story, one worthy of a memoir, was trickled through to us.

When we get back to our cabin, first things first, we light the fire and crack open a bottle of wine, perching ourselves on the deck looking out over the rolling hillside. We’d left dinner a bit too late but with Jackie to the rescue, she conjured up a bowl of homemade soup for the two of us. It was sublime, the perfect way to end the evening. As the sun goes down, the sky turns candy floss pink and the landscape around us is bathed in pastel colours. It's spectacular and we have it all to ourselves.

Come morning we wake to absolute stillness and serenity. The only sounds of birdsong bouncing around the sunken valley. We woke slow, finding our feet and finding the coffee pot. Shuffling around, we manage to lather some crumpets with locally made butter and spreads. The room itself, adorned with objects and furnishings collected from around the world, there’s vintage chairs, mixed with modern amenities. In terms of practicalities, there’s a full kitchen, satellite wifi, TV, wood fire, basic provisions and firewood. There is an honesty bar onsite as well as a private pétanque court . Highly advise grabbing a cool beer from the bar and cracking into a game of pétanque.

Fleetwood is the ideal location for a couple’s city escape - just under 30 minutes from Matiatia Wharf, Waiheke Island. Combine a stay at Fleetwood with a dining experience at Poderi Crisci. Poderi Crisci, widely recognised as one of Waiheke’s finest restaurants, is on their doorstep. Indulge in their unforgettable Sunday long lunch, enjoy a glass of wine at the La Locanda, or a romantic dinner al fresco. Ask them about their opening special - including late check out on a Sunday and a complimentary drop off to Poderi Crisci.
