How wonderful it is to come across a stay that feels like home. A beautiful escape to reconnect with a simpler way of life, it’s easy to fall in love with Poppy’s Place. We spent a few nights getting to know the in’s and out’s of one of New Zealand’s hidden seaside towns and one of its sweetest slow stays.

This stunning stay is hard to find a bad angle. The rammed earth wall provides an amazing backdrop to your stay. Originally meant for demolition, owners Issy and Billy attempted to stipe back the wall only to find it was too thick to pull away. A small sign of intervention as it has now become the staple feature of the room.

Thoughtfully curated interiors inside the spacious room. A beautiful window seat to sit with a morning coffee, a book and watch the sunlight dance off the garden. This is where I spent most mornings, and afternoon’s. Sunlight trickling through. Swapping the coffee out for a gin & tonic in the evenings.

Earthen kitchenware line the shelfs in the mini indoor kitchen. An eclectic mix of vintage finds and second-hand treasures. Issy has the keen eye for a collection that matches perfectly with the stay. Giving that rustic and loved feeling. You’ll find a batch of eggs ready for delicious consumption, straight from the chickens hatch in front of Poppy’s. Feel free to pop in to see them to grab a couple if you need a few more!

A large bed finds it’s home in the corner, and overhead, a loft to tuck away your belongings. The loft may double as another space to sleep a third guest so feel free to request ahead if theres another eager traveller in your group. Surf trip anyone?

Wander around the property and you may just come across two sweet miniature cows. Friendly as ever, grab a handful of hay and tempt them with a little afternoon tea. Plus it makes for a great photo-op.

Humble, rustic and truly loved. Poppy’s Place is exactly what a slow stay is all about. Visiting in the winter, it made for cosier moments - hot drinks and warm blankets. I can only imagine summer would be full of outdoor wines, small chatter, and fruit platters. All year round, you’ll be tempted with Poppy’s delights.
