The Nest 5 | Our Favourite NZ Thrifters

The time of the thrifter is upon us! Its the age of Depop and second hand insta-shops. We’re in pre-loved heaven.

We’ve hand picked a few of our favourite collectors. Each collector has a unique style and perfectly curates their collections around their aesthetics. Buying second hand pieces is one of the best ways to stop harmful textile waste and slows down the destructive cycle of fast fashion. All collectors involved have begun their journey the same way - by wanting a more regenerative and sustainable way of shopping.

All these thrifters put a lot of time and effort into curating amazing selections of repurposed goods and their efforts don’t go unnoticed by us. We love each of their styles and we think you will too. Check em’ out here.

  1. HOT WEAR

@hotwearstore

These guys are so good at what they do they actually have their own thrift merch. With a whopping 15k following on Instagram - Hot Wear are the kings of the thrifter playground. Their style is vintage surf-wear and retro fits. Think Rachel Hunter and Cameron Diaz papped in the 90’s chic. Baggy tee’s with logos and back in fashion streetwear for all body types. We’re lucky enough to call these guys pals and we can’t wait to see what goods they have in store next!

2. WAVES VINTAGE

@shopwavesvintage

4/62 Randolph St, Eden Terrace, Auckland

A vintage icon among those that love the pre-loved. Waves have no doubt solidified themselves as the queen of the hive when it comes to finding items that are must have’s in your wardrobe. We love their art direction on clothing shoots, and trickles of mood inspirations throughout their gram. Sought after items usually snapped up within minutes of going live on their site - its the commitment they have to sourcing only the chicest vintage pieces that make them a commodity in the thrifting community.

3. THE RECYCLING

@the_recycling

Another incredibly eye pleasing feed to browse through for your next staple wardrobe piece. The soft yellow tones behind each shoot give the feel of pre nostalgia warm fuzzies. Don’t ask me what that means, I just feel very strongly for soft Pantone palettes.

The pieces are on the more feminine side - silk slips and corsets as well as sweet minis and knit tops. I once saw a lemon mohair knit pop up that was truly the only jumper I would have ever worn for the rest of my life. Turns out I wasn’t the only one who keeled over for it. 10 minutes after it was posted it was in the arms of another. I really hope the lucky person who snapped it up is singing lullabies to it every night & and bathing it in milk and honey. Tell her I miss her.

4. THE LITTLE JUNGLE

@thelittlejungleco

One of our favourite curated instagram feeds. Everything The Little Jungle posts makes us have to deeply consider if we could do with another pair of wide leg flairs. The answer always falls under the ‘just one more wouldn’t hurt’ category.

Supple and flowy numbers, plenty of dreamy ‘I could wear this scooting around Paris with Regé-Jean Page on my arm’ pieces. New collections each Tuesday. We love a consistent queen. Show The Little Jungle some love and find your next Paris number.. for 2023 of course.

5. CRUSHES

@crushes_shop

Karangahape Rd, Auckland

The final stop (or maybe first) for all your vintage go-to’s. Bright, vibrant and full of character, Crushes don’t hold back when it comes to the playful and wonderful. I was one of those ‘my whole wardrobe is black because black goes with everything’ people until I bought my first vintage colour piece from crushes. It was a bright red gingham short sleeve top and I wore it to every goddamn festival until a disastrous wine incident. I will forever cherish the memories I have with that gingham top. Have I digressed? Crushes are your vintage confidants. Special mention to literally everyone that works here. They’re all angels.
