Meet The Maker | Deià

Deià was brought to life in 2020 by Maia Rewha and Bella Voogt. With a combined experience of eleven years within the design industry, Maia and Bella both felt a need to forge their own path, to shine light on the importance of kaitiakitanga and designing without damage. We think you’ll learn a lot from these two. Read about their journey here.

Explain to us the DEIÀ's ethos?

We use sustainable design thinking as an opportunity to add value and longevity to all of our projects – everything we do is done with consciousness and integrity. As designers, we need to be ever more aware of the repercussions of product and material selection, and the impact these decisions have on the sustainability of our environment.

What did you want its driving goal to be?

To create beautiful spaces and to design with purpose. Working together in a previous interior design role pushed us toward a want and need for change. Instead of the fast paced working environment we were accustomed to, we wanted to step back and really take the time to design with careful consideration.

How do you incorporate sustainability and conscious interiors into your work?

Adding character to a home though the incorporation of repurposed materials and homewares plays a big role in what we do. We consider the lifespan of any material we plan to use and are mindful that trends come and go quickly. We mainly gravitate towards a classic aesthetic with a contemporary twist, complimented by the use of natural colours and materials.

We believe timeless design suppresses the urge for constant change, and as a result, reduces our environmental footprint by preventing materials and products being discarded too often. We're also really fortunate to work alongside some amazing local and like minded suppliers too.

Who or what do you draw inspiration from?

Without sounding cliche... nature is the biggest source of inspiration for us. The diversity of the natural world continually offers new ideas and approaches to form, texture and colour. We're really drawn to raw and organic colours and materials such as wood, copper, and stone.

We also find ourselves inspired by the younger generation and their increasing awareness of being environmentally responsible. It’s a refreshing perspective to have a collective that is really pushing for positive change.

Finally, where do you hope to see us as a collective community in 5 years?

We hope that more and more will seek to incorporate sustainability principles into their designs, building processes and interiors, and that there is still a steady progression toward a healthier, more harmonious relationship between humans and our beautiful environment.
