Checking In | Kererū Retreat

The Kereru Retreat is an award winning tiny home designed by Studio Well. It completely won over our off grid loving hearts when we visited last month. Located just one hour from Christchurch, it’s the perfect destination stop for a couples getaway or solo wanderer.

Unplug from the demands of modern society and reconnect with nature in this handcrafted alpine tiny retreat. Nestled amongst ancient native trees this cabin has been thoughtfully designed with relaxation in mind. Located just one hour from Christchurch and only ten minutes from the local amenities of Methven this self-contained retreat is the perfect escape for couples and solo adventurers. The Kereru Retreat is fully off grid and powered by the sun. It provides enough energy to power a phone charger, lighting and the fridge. Just be mindful of your usage and switch of anything when not in use. A modernised composting loo (designed by the Sweeds of course!) is in the cabin along with NZ local biodegradable amenities.

We spent our evening gathering firewood and cooking up our world famous (to us..) quinoa salad and veggies. Soft crackling from the logs burning inside the fire made for the perfect soundtrack to our evening. As the cabin runs completely off solar, it gave us plenty of insentive to tuck away under the covers for an early night. We barely used a light switch as the burning embers from the fire kept a soothing glow through-out the cabin over the evening. Both with a book in hand, we sat in comfortable silence, enjoying the peaceful night.

Come dawn, we were tipped off that the sunrise at Kereru was not one to miss. As you’ll need to shut the shutters at night due to often rouge gusts of wind coming down from the mountains, I had set my alarm for 6am to make sure a quick dash to open the doors was not missed. There was a brief moment where the comfort and warmth of the bed was too inviting, but I had to see that sunrise.

Just before 7am we were treated to a spectacular event. The sun rises directly in front of the cabin, allowing one of the most marvellous sights you’ll see. I was back in bed, huddled with a blanket around me by this point, sipping morning coffee. Its so unbelievably worth getting out of the warm bed for.. we promise.
